The ‘contracting out’ of the maintenance function on a golf course has become increasingly popular over the last ten years in South Africa. This has come about primarily because there are not enough suitably qualified Course Superintendents. For over ten years WST has provided agronomic and management consulting services at tournament level, to numerous golf course facilities and also to contractors themselves. Under this service WST was responsible for contractual, management and technical issues pertaining to all the maintenance operations at a number of resorts and courses.

It is this experience that has afforded WST a unique insight into what constitutes a successful, out-sourced golf course maintenance operation. Standards of performance have been developed whereby a golf course maintenance function can become measurable. Many contract maintenance agreements have failed when put to the test, while others have prospered.
