The green cavity is dug 450mm below ground level and then the "herring-bone" drainage trenches are dug further into the substructure.Perforated piping is then installed into drainage lines. These gravitationally feed excess water to a sump and then away from the green and bunker complex.

Landscaping at KSIA

Stone is placed in the drainage trenches and then the green cavity is filled with a layer of the same stone to a depth of 100mm.The base stone layer is "floated" with sandpro machines and the shape of the green surface can be visualized. The filter layer, which is 2 - 4mm stone, is spread to a depth of 50mm. This layer prevents the "growing medium" which will be placed on top of it, from mixing into the base stone layer.

The growing medium is spread with a sandpro to a depth of 300mm and now the green cavity is filled to ground level. The designer makes sure the surface is shaped exactly as he wants it before seeding. The seeding machine dispenses seed at a calibrated rate and is then worked into the ground with the "knobbly" tyres of a sandpro. With regular watering the grass comes up within weeks. As soon as the grass is strong enough to withstand it, fertilizers are added. Any foreign grass and debris is removed and approximately 3 weeks after seeding the greens have their first cut. Thereafter they are cut every 2 days. Further fertilizing, top-dressing and rolling are the final steps in preparation before play.
