Peter Matkovitch

Having played competitively on the European Tour, South African Tour and the Australasian Tour alongside the leading players of the time, Peter is able to combine that experience with his knowledge of turf management, local fauna and flora, and how golf is played at amateur levels - to give him the feel and understanding of golf strategy and design.

One of the greatest advantages of a Peter Matkovich design is that he himself makes regular site visits through every phase of construction. After all, how can a design, on paper, be put in the ground exactly as the designer has designed it if he is not there? Construction and design is a dynamic process that needs to be melded together, requiring constant input from the designer himself. With this in mind Peter will not take on more than a few courses at a time so that each project gets his full and proper attention. Designing and building golf courses is Peter’s passion; it is also his only business and his sole focus.

The Routing Plan

Each project is assessed individually and site information is gathered by walking the area, studying topographical maps and aerial photographs, assessing geotechnical soil surveys and wetland studies. With this information the design team produces the routing plan for the course. Incorporated into this plan are a number of vital details such as where the sun rises and falls, so that the outgoing and incoming holes are not played into the sun, the prevailing wind directions, trees and habitat that needs to be protected and or integrated, and where the natural flow of water runs. With regular site visits the design is fine-tuned from what is on paper to what is in the ground.Peter is a true environmentalist whose love of the indigenous remains a cornerstone of his design philosophy, underlined by his mantra, ‘Listen to the land’. This is further explained in Peter’s own words, “The land and nature must determine the shape, style and direction of play. The design must aesthetically enhance the nature of the environment - not detract from it - as if time and nature herself have shaped the course.”

Variety & Flexibility

To achieve this, emphasis must be placed on multiple tee positions and greens having subtle slopes and options for varied pin positions. There should also however be options for playing each hole on the basis that greater risk brings greater reward. While every course is designed to international standards it must also be enjoyable and fun to play for every class of golfer.

Balance

Ultimately what elevates any designer above others is the almost instinctive ability to create balance on the golf course. The holes must vary and be a mix that are played into the prevailing winds and then with them, up hills and then down, long and then short with greens of varying difficulty, and then all at the right time, to test the golfer physically and also mentally.

Only absolute perfection and classic style will enable a golf course to stand the test of time. Each course is tangible testimony to Peter’s love of the game and every design is one on which he is proud to put his signature.
