The bunker cavity is dug out of the shaped fairway or green complex and either a Bitumen Liner (A mix of bitumen and cement) is used to line the base of the bunker approx 1 inch thick or a grass liner is planted through the base of a bunker and allowed to grow to a point where it has created a decent matting. Sand is installed on top of the grass and the grass acts as the interface. Occasionally a bidim layer is used and serves the same purpose, to prevent the bunker sand from mixing into the base soil and vice versa. The drainage sump is visible in some of the images and for large bunkers, drainage trenches are dug and installed with perforated piping to improve drainage. Beautiful bunkers are great to play out of and enhance the asthetics of a course immensely.
